The United Natural Products Alliance organizes its key objectives and work plans through a series of memorandums of understanding (MOUs) and commercial partnerships that bring expertise, influence and trusted reputations. By laying out our joint objectives via an MOU, UNPA is able to serve the needs of its members and its industry stakeholders with greatest effect and efficiency. 

Through its MOU Partnerships, UNPA is also able to offer certification programs and a wide variety of educational offerings, including regular Expert Insights webinars for its members and, with NSF International, good manufacturing practice, Food Safety & Modernization Act, Botanical Materials Verification and other trainings for industry.

MOU Partners

Founded in 1985, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) is the national professional society representing licensed naturopathic physicians. AANP aims to increase awareness of and access to naturopathic physicians, provide high-quality continuing education, expand the body of naturopathic medicine research and help its members build successful medical practices. AANP's physician members are graduates of naturopathic medical schools that derive their accreditation from the U.S. Department of Education. AANP's members also include other health care professionals and corporate members, who collectively strive to advance the profession of naturopathic medicine nationwide. AANP has 44 official state affiliates across the country.

 

 

The American Botanical Council (ABC) is a nonprofit, member-supported organization whose mission is to provide education using science-based and traditional information to promote responsible use of herbal medicine to the public, researchers, educators, healthcare professionals, industry, and media. The Web site includes searchable electronic resources includingHerbalGram, ABC's peer-reviewed quarterly journal; HerbClip, a twice-monthly series of summaries and critical reviews of recently published herbal literature; HerbMedPro, an interactive, electronic herbal database providing hyperlinked access to the scientific data underlying the use of herbs for health;The Complete German Commission E Monographs;Herbal Medicine: Expanded Commission E Monographs: and more.

 

The American Herbal Pharmacopoeia (AHP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) California-based organization. The mission of AHP is to promote the responsible use of herbal products and herbal medicines. AHP produces critically reviewed documents called monographs that outline the quality control criteria needed for ensuring the identity, purity, and quality of botanical raw materials. Each document also presents a complete and critical review of the traditional and scientific literature regarding the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines.The monographs expand on everything you want to know about the botanical and a whole lot you do not want to know about it; botany, chemistry, harvesting, growing, drying, storage, purity standards, dosage, side effects, contraindications, drug interactions, etc. AHP plans to complete 300 monographs, which include Western, Ayurvedic and Chinese botanicals.

 

   

Since its inception in 1978, Bastyr University has been a pioneer in science-based natural medicine. Although the school started as a naturopathic medicine college, Bastyr University now offers more than 20 degree and certificate programs. Building on its science-based foundation, the university has been the recipient of a number of multimillion-dollar research grants from the National Institutes of Health.

 

In September 2012, the university expanded again, opening Bastyr University California in San Diego, welcoming more than 50 students to its inaugural Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine class. California’s first and only accredited school of naturopathic medicine also offers a Master of Science in Nutrition for Wellness and plans to add more natural health programs in the future.


 

British Columbia Institute of Technology seeks to identify research areas, create a response system for scientific and regulatory issues, promote the development and use of botanical and chemical reference materials and analytical technologies, encourage innovation and advancement of state-of-practice development and manufacture of botanical-based products.

 

  CoQ10 Association seeks to advance the state of CoQ10 dietary supplement education, research, safety and quality, nationally and internationally.
 

The Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3 (GOED) is a proactive and accountable association of the world's finest processors, refiners, manufacturers, distributors, marketers, retailers and supporters of products containing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) omega-3 fatty acids. The organization's objectives are to promote and protect the category, educate consumers about the health benefits of EPA/DHA, and work with government groups, the healthcare community and the industry, while setting high standards for its business sector. GOED and its members are committed to personal integrity, ethical corporate behavior, public safety and quality assurance.

 

The International Association for the Advancement of High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC Association) promotes the use of HPTLC in plant analysis and other analytical fields. The association brings together representatives from academia, industry, research and regulatory and standards-setting bodies. It serves the purpose to:

  • Develop and validate common standards and methods for identification of plants and their adulterants
  • Establish and maintain an International Atlas of HPTLC Methods for Identification of Herbal Drugs (ATLAS) as a recognized reference tool for quality control
  • Serve as the worldwide, leading resource in information about and training in HPTLC to the scientific community
  • Support pharmacopoeias and similar organizations of individual countries or regions with expertise, guidance, methods and validation data

 

The National Center for Natural Products Research is located at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. The school is globally recognized for its multidisciplinary research in the discovery, development and translation of innovative solutions to health care problems. The Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (RIPS) is also housed within the School of Pharmacy. RIPS was established to discover and disseminate knowledge of natural drug products, develop and commercialize new products, improve public health, and stimulate the economy. Within RIPS is the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR). The NCNPR is the nation's only university research center devoted to improving human health and agricultural productivity through the discovery, development and commercialization of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals derived from plants, marine organisms and other natural products. NCNPR is world-renowned for its pioneering work in developing novel methods to identify new constituents in herbal products and to isolate and purify them so that they can be further studied for use as potential medicines and herbal health products.
